Wisdom teeth are your last set of molars which generally erupt at 18-21 years old, hence the name wisdom! Some people are lucky enough to be able to keep their wisdom teeth. In other cases wisdom teeth are removed due to lack of space or wisdom teeth growing in unfavourable positions. Some patients find them difficult to clean and as a result have decay in their wisdom teeth, leaving them to be extracted.
At St Ives Smiles, we like to diagnose potential issues with wisdom teeth at an appropriate age, as it is easier to treatment plan potential extractions when younger. A full mouth x-ray is taken to determine the presence of wisdom teeth, if they need to be extracted and if so, options such as in the chair under local anaesthetic by our dentists or require a referral to an Oral Surgeon.
